Happy birthday to Caroline Herschel (1750 – 1848) a trail blazing woman in #astronomy. Hers was a real life Cinderella story, where rather than marrying a prince, she made a life and career for herself. Marriage her expected role but she was deemed unmarriageable, since a childhood bout of typhus stunted her growth. Her mother thought she should train to be a servant, & purposely stood in the way of her learning French, or music,

What's next for climate modeling?
internationally recognized #femaleScientists, including #MPI_director Sarah Kang, argue: Instead of picking just 1 path, #climateresearch should embrace #diversity&integrate multiple approaches–e.g., artificial intelligence #AI
, km-scale modeling, & parameter tuning. They show how the past provides us with ample evidence that a diverse strategy is most promising.

“Since my goal was to solve a problem no one had ever solved before, it required a creative and flexible approach, one that emphasized the exploration, experimentation, and steady refinement of ideas. But perhaps the most important lesson I learned was that there is no single “correct” way to be a mathematician.” - Katy Micek

Seeing dark matter in the Andromeda galaxy
By Vera Rubin, from the archives, via @physicstoday
This is a story of why and how Kent Ford and I studied the orbital velocities of stars in the Andromeda galaxy 40 years ago. Our study was influential in the later conclusion that most of the matter in the universe is dark.

Celebrating International Women’s Day at the ECDF in collaboration with the @tuberlin
On March 7, 2025 we hosted an inspiring event dedicated to women’s rights, gender equality & empowering women in every field, but especially in STEM!
Thank you to everyone who participated, shared their stories, and helped make changes toward a more inclusive and equal #digitalfuture!
Oh, this is unexpected! I was listed in the top 100 science blogs online for my newsletter. Which reminds me that I haven’t made any science articles on it lately. I mostly talk about writing, but occasionally have science posts. Sign up here: https://jendia-gammon.ghost.io/

On this #InternationalWomensDay, let me highlight two #WomenInSTEM.
First, Amy Cromartie, who leads the following @EuroGeosciences #preprint:

Second, Devika Varma, who recently defended her #PhD #thesis. Her PhD work at @NIOZnieuws aimed to investigate #paleotemperature indicators based on #archaeal hydroxylated #tetraether #lipids (OH-isoGDGTs):

My ongoing series of portraits of #womenInSTEM for #iwd2025
For #InternationalWomensDay a short thread of my ongoing series of portraits of women in science through history. If you look for them, they’re there. I’m up to 67 now! Here’s to the day when a scientist’s sex is no longer remarkable in any field!
Movements are built on courage and community.
On #InternationalWomensDay, we celebrate the women who challenge barriers – past and present. At WoCaNet, we bring together inspiring voices from all walks of life to share their journeys.
Join us on June 4-5, 2025, and be part of the conversation. #WomenInSTEM #Feminism #WoCaNet

Oh hey it's #InternationalWomensDay is it
Do something
Don't go around wishing women in your life 'happy' whatever, please.
Men are killing women every three days in the UK.
What are we doing about it? Seemingly, not much.
Take action.

Happy #InternationalWomensDay!
Today, we celebrate the contributions of women & people across the gender spectrum in science! At EGU, we recognise the work of all these people as researchers, educators, volunteers, leaders & more!

#Fraunpower at Fraunhofer IOF
Imagine a world where science misses half its brilliance.
At Fraunhofer IOF, women are shaping the future of optics and photonics. But science doesn’t happen in the lab alone! Our success is driven by incredible women in all aspects of the institute – research, recruitment or communication. Their expertise and dedication make innovation possible.
On this International Women’s Day, we say it loud: We need more #WomeninSTEM to enrich the world of science!
#OnTheDay, 6 Mar 1906, Nora Stanton Blatch was admitted to the American Association of Civil Engineers. The first woman, she was allowed junior status but still denied full membership.
Today I posted an article on the #Tutor #Mentor blog with information about two webinars I attended recently. The focus on networks, ecosystems and #STEM. Are you part of these networks. https://tutormentor.blogspot.com/2025/03/stem-and-networks-share-these-resources.html
